Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalized racism and fostering racial reconciliation.
In the worlds of Nelson Mandela Foundation, let us use Nelson Mandela International Day (Mandela Day) as a renewal of commitment to making a sustainable difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It is more than a celebration of life and legacy of Nelson Mandela; it is a global movement to honor his life’s work and to change the world for the better. For us, it was only logical to compile a list of 18 quotes, to mark the 18 July, but to also mark 99 years since Mendela was born (99 -> 9+9=18).
