Gautama Buddha (c. 563 BCE/480 BCE – c. 483 BCE/400 BCE), also known as Siddhārtha Gautama, Śhakyamuni Buddha, or simply the Buddha, after the title of Buddha, was an ascetic (śramaṇa) and sage, on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. He is believed to have lived and taught mostly in the eastern part of ancient India sometime between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE. Gautama is the primary figure in Buddhism.

The way is not in the sky. The way is in the heart.

The disciple should associate with a wise friend who detects and censures his faults and who points out virtues as a guide tells of buried treasures. There is happiness not woe to him who associates with such an intelligent friend.

Giving the best to others is giving the best to ourselves. The value of life is not based on how long we live, but how much we can contribute to others in our society.

There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth... not going all the way and not starting.

Let a man avoid evil deeds as a man who loves life avoids poison.

Being generous, just helping one's relatives and being blameless in one's actions, this is the best good luck.

He who loves 50 people has 50 woes, he who loves no one has no woes.

To eat meat is just a habit after we were born. In fact, we are not born to eat meat.

They are not following dharma who resort to violence to achieve their purpose. But those who lead others through nonviolent means, knowing right and wrong, may be called guardians of the dharma.

It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.

The world indeed is like a dream and the treasures of the world are an alluring mirage! Like the apparent distances in a picture, things have no reality in themselves but they are like heat haze.

Born out of concern for all beings.

Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it.

If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly our whole life would change.

The greatest prayer is patience

There is nothing so disobedient as an undisciplined mind, and there is nothing so obedient as a disciplined mind.

The stages of the Noble Path are: Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Behavior, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

Our theories of the eternal are as valuable as are those which a chick, which has not broken its way through its shell, might form of the outside world.

Having abandoned the ways of darkness, let the wise follow the light. Having come from home to homelessness, let him enjoy the bliss of solitude so difficult to achieve.

Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.

Through zeal knowledge is gotten, through lack of zeal knowledge is lost, let a man who knows the double path of gain and loss thus place himself that knowledge may grow.

You should respect each other and refrain from disputes, you should not like water and oil repel each other, but should like milk and water mingle together.

There is having flowers in Spring, breezes in Summer, moon in Autumn, snows in Winter. If there is nothing worrying over you it will be the best seasons at all times.

A wise man recognizing that the world is but an illusion does not act as if it is real so he escapes the suffering.

His success may be great, but be it ever so great the wheel of fortune may turn again and bring him down into the dust.

Virtue is persecuted more by the wicked than it is loved by the good.

Seeking but not finding the house builder, I traveled through life after life. How painful is repeated birth! House-builders you have now been seen. You will not build the house again.

Those who really seek the path to Enlightenment dictate terms to their mind. Then they proceed with strong determination.

Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care, for people will hear them and be influenced by them, for good or ill.

The foot feels the foot when it feels the ground.

Whatever is not yours: let go of it. Your letting go of it will be for your long-term happiness and benefit.

It is in the nature of things that joy arises in a person free from remorse.

If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts, happiness follows them like a never-departing shadow.

I do not dispute with the world; rather it is the world that disputes with me.

This life of separateness may be compared to a dream, a phantasm, a bubble, a shadow, a drop of dew, a flash of lightning.

Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace.

Everything is changeable, everything appears and disappears, there is no blissful peace until one passes beyond the agony of life and death.

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind, he can find the way to Enlightenment and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.

A family is a place where minds come in contact with one another.

Thousands upon thousands of lights is inferior to a light of heart.

What is the noble truth of suffering? Birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, and sorrow and lamentation, pain, grief and despair are suffering.

Better the man that conquer a thousand-thousand men is the one who conquer one himself.

Meditate. Live purely. Be quiet. Do your work with mastery. Like the moon come out from behind the clouds! Shine!

Nothing ever exists entirely alone, everything is in relation to everything else.

As from a large heap of flowers many garlands and wreaths are made, so by a mortal in this life there is much good work to be done.

What is evil? Killing is evil, lying is evil, slandering is evil, abuse is evil, gossip is evil, envy is evil, hatred is evil, to cling to false doctrine is evil, all these things are evil. And what is the root of evil? Desire is the root of evil, illusion is the root of evil.

Wish I am free from barriers when I die and Buddha will welcome me from far away.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else, you are the one who gets burned.

Neither fire nor wind, birth nor death, can erase our good deeds.

Observe the life by cause and consequence. Explore the life by wisdom. Treat the life by equality. Complete the life by love.

You cannot travel the path until you have become the path itself.

A man may conquer a million men in battle, but one who conquers himself is indeed the greatest of conquerors.

On a long journey of human life faith is the best of companions, it is the best refreshment on the journey, and it is the greatest property.

A man should first direct himself in the way he should go. Only then should he instruct others.

He is not the same nor is he another.

Health is the first benefit. Content is the fortune. Friendliness is the first kindness. Nirvana is the first happiness.

To keep the body in good health is a duty, for otherwise we shall not be able to trim the lamp of wisdom and keep our mind strong and clear. Water surrounds the lotus flower, but does not wet its petals.

Life at home is cramped and dirty, it is difficult to live a spiritual life completely perfect and pure in all its parts while cabinned.

In seperateness lies the world's great misery, in compassion lies the world's true strength.

He should focus his mind upon that exalted state (nirvana). Having given up all sense pleasures possessing nothing let the wise cleansing the mind from defilements purify the self.

It is within this fathoms-long carcass with its mind and its notions that I declare there is the worl,d the origin of the world, the cessation of the world, and the path leading to the cessation of the world.

The big belly can accommodate all kinds of things. The benevolence is never let a dust behind.

Reverence, humility, contentment, gratitude and hearing the good Dhamma, this is the best good luck

Decay is inherent in all compounded things. Strive on with diligence.

For all mortals birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, sickness is suffering.

Besides the respect of the lives of human beings all the animals and plants should be on the list too. That is the real humanitarianism.

Whatsoever after due examination and analysis you find to be kind conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings, that doctrine believe and cling to and take it as your guide.

It is nature's law that rivers wind, trees grow wood, and given the opportunity women work iniquity.

Those who, by form, did see me and those who followed me by voice. Wrong the efforts they engaged in those people will not see me.

On life's journey faith is nourishment virtuous deeds are a shelter, wisdom is the light by day and right mindfulness is the protection by night. If a man lives a pure life nothing can destroy him.

If a man who enjoys a lesser happiness beholds a greater one, let him leave aside the lesser to gain the greater.

Keeping away from all evil deeds, cultivation of life by doing good deeds, and purification of mind from mental impurities.

All beings are not only the parents in the past. They will become the Buddha in the future. If you free their lives you are the Buddha.

Ambition is like love impatient both of delays and rivals.

We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.

This indeed is a safe refuge, it is the refuge supreme. It is the refuge whereby one is freed from all suffering.

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.

Make a proper investigation first. Proper investigation is good for a well-known person like yourself.

Someone who has set out in the vehicle of a Bodhisattva should decide that `I must lead all the beings to nirvana, into that realm of nirvana which leaves nothing behind'. What is this realm of nirvana which leaves nothing behind?

Let the wise guard their thoughts which are difficult to perceive extremely subtle and wander at will. Thought which is well guarded is the bearer of happiness.

It is wrong to think that misfortunes come from the east or from the west, they originate within one's own mind. Therefore it is foolish to guard against misfortunes from the external world and leave the inner mind uncontrolled.

When one has the feeling of dislike for evil when one feels tranquil one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings, when one has these feelings and appreciates them one is free of fear.

Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes.

Embrace nothing: If you meet the Buddha kill the Buddha. If you meet your father kill your father. Only live your life as it is Not bound to anything.

Buddha is in our hearts Buddha is in our mouths Buddha is in our daily lives.

This existence of ours is as transient as Autumn clouds. To watch the birth and death of beings is like looking at the movements of a dance. A lifetime is a flash of lightning in the sky. Rushing by like a torrent down a steep mountain.

Wherever there is possession of marks there is fraud , wherever there is no-possession of no-marks there is no fraud. Hence the Tathagata is to be seen from no-marks as marks.

To refrain from evil and from strong drink and to be always steadfast in virtue, this is the good luck.

Prefer the afterlife is better than this one. Never let this life is better than next one.

He insulted me, he cheated me, he beat me, he robbed me' - those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace.

The example of the raft shows dharmas should be treated as provisional as means to an end. The same holds good of emptiness too the negation of dharmas. This corollary has elsewhere been illustrated by the simile of medicine which can heal any ill

It is to see the faults of others but difficult to see once own faults. One shows the faults of others like chaff winnowed in the wind but one conceals one's own faults as a cunning gambler conceals his dice.

It is surprising in the welter of questions that one gets at (languor) how few actually relate to the performance of the company or the decisions taken by the board in particular areas.

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all then accept it and live up to it.

My doctrine is not a doctrine but just a vision. I have not given you any set rules, I have not given you a system.

If a man possesses a repentant spirit his sins will disappear, but if he has an unrepentant spirit his sins will continue and condemn him for their sake forever.

Again a different meaning has to be understood.

All acts of living become bad by ten things and by avoiding the ten things they become good. There are three evils of the body, four evils of the tongue and three evils of the mind.

It takes hundred of years sitting together in the same boat. It takes thousand of years sharing the same bed with. It calls : The predestined affinity.

The wise having hearkened to the Good Law become serene like unto a deep calm and crystal-clear lake.

Those whose minds are well fixed upon the elements of enlightenment, who without hankering after anything glory in renunciation, whose biases are extinguished, who are full of light -  they indeed have attained the bliss of nirvana in this very world.

The Buddhas do but tell the way, it is for you to swelter at the task.

You must leave righteous ways behind, not to speak of unrighteous ways.
